Potato Harvest in Europe 2026: What Lower Production Means for Frozen Fries Buyers

Potato Harvest in Europe 2026: Impact on Frozen Fries Supply In 2026, the harvest of potatoes in Europe is predicted to be much less than 2025. Potato production in several important growing areas has been impacted by lower planted acreage, reduced yields, and summer weather conditions. The 2026 European crop will therefore be an important one to watch for buyers and businesses dealing in frozen French fries and other processed potato products.

European Potato Harvest 2026: Lower Area and Production

The potato area in the combined Belgium, Germany, France, and the Netherlands decreased by 13.7% in 2026 compared to 2025, from approximately 604,000 ha in 2025 to about 521,500 ha in 2026, according to the North-Western European Potato Growers (NEPG). The potato processing industry in these four countries plays an important role in North-Western Europe. Along with the fall in acreage, yields have also come down. NEPG estimates the combined crop of these four countries at around 20.7 million tonnes in 2026, compared with 27.75 million tonnes in 2025. That is an estimated drop of 25.4% in production. The estimated average yield is about 40.5 tonnes per hectare, 13.9% below the previous year and 9.4% below the five-year average. The potatoes from these four countries are of special significance to the potato processing industry in Europe, which provides processed potato products to retail, foodservice, and international markets.

Weather Adds to the Pressure on the 2026 Crop

A smaller crop due to lower planting is not the only factor. The 2026 growing season weather also has impacted European agriculture. In September, the European Commission's Joint Research Centre said that the summer in Europe was exceptionally hot and dry and that severe rainfall deficits were present. The EU assessment of potato production was around 7% below the 5-year average in its MARS. The reduced area of planting combined with high temperatures and inadequate rainfall impacted the crop development in a few areas. This translates to a lower potato acreage and reduced yield for the European potato market in 2026.

Why Potato Size and Quality Matter for Frozen Fries

The amount of potatoes is just one of the factors for the frozen French fries industry. For potato processing, it is necessary that potatoes possess certain requirements in terms of size, length and other quality parameters. In 2026, tuber size and length have been reported to be below average in parts of North-Western Europe by NEPG. The organisation has also said there could be problems for some farmers to meet contracted volumes due to crop conditions. This is especially important for processors, as potatoes used for French fries must yield an appropriate raw product for a uniform product. Tuber size and availability can thus become a key factor in procurement. However, a smaller European potato crop does not automatically mean that frozen fries will be unavailable. How much this affects prices can change depending on how much stock is already available, how much supply is under contract, and what processors are holding in inventory. Product and procurement requirements also play a part. For buyers, though, the bigger worry is what a smaller crop does to the supply of raw material, to product specifications, and to how they plan their purchasing.

Where Does India Fit Into the Market?

The potato harvest for 2026 in Europe is reduced, while the frozen potato processing sector and exports are growing in India. Based on trade data, India exported about 286,228 tonnes of frozen French fries over the past 12 months ending in April 2026, which was an increase of 50.2% from the previous year. In April 2026, some 30,263 tonnes of exports were recorded. This growth highlights India’s increasing relevance as an origin for Indian frozen fries and other frozen potato products. Indian suppliers are already catering to markets abroad and include destinations all across Asia, Middle East and beyond. For buyers, this does not imply that India will become a substitute for European suppliers. Instead, India can provide another sourcing origin for businesses looking to develop a broader and more flexible procurement network.

What Should Frozen Fries Buyers Consider?

When it comes to choosing a frozen fries exporter from India, importers, distributors, QSRs and foodservice businesses must look beyond the price and take other factors into account. The specifications, consistency of the product from one batch to another, planning of production, packaging, food-safety systems, export documentation, the handling of the cold-chain and the capacity of the supplier to process repeat orders may be considered. This is particularly important when the customers need frequent orders for frozen French fries or multiple frozen potato products for foodservice and distribution.
